Bun B & Rice Uni Launch ‘Religion & Hip Hop Culture’ Course

Bun B has teamed up with Rice University to develop a new, free online course titled ‘Religion and Hip Hop Culture.’ Scheduled to commence March 24, the course builds upon the popular class the two have already been teaching at Rice University.

In the course, students delve into the ways in which hip hop culture delivers life meaning in complex ways through a discussion of its history and musical content; an examination of religion in rap music; an exploration of the religious sensibilities of rap artists; and a discussion of the implications of the connection between rap and religion.

“This course gave me the opportunity to let people see a side of hip hop that isn’t always discussed,” Bun said in a statement. “We’ve started a conversation that cannot end until people have a better understanding of who we are and what we do.”

The professors will also intertwine a mix of text, music, videos, images, stories and behind-the scenes insider perspectives to carry out the coursework.

Students who are enrolled will be asked to participate 2-5 hours per week and complete assignments based on the required reading and lectures.
