Movie Review: Speak No Evil

A vacation to Italy is always a good idea.. until it becomes the basis for a sinister “friendship,” in which case, it’s definitely not a good idea. The 2024 remake of ‘Speak No Evil’ by James Watkins is based on the 2022 film by the Tafdrup brothers of the same name, and it’s a complete thrill-ride.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: on a vacation in Tuscany, an American and a UK family become friends. Months later, the UK family invites the Americans over for a weekend at their countryside home.

What starts as a joyful reunion soon turns unsettling, as misunderstandings grow and UK hospitality takes a super dark turn. The American couple, trapped by politeness, ignore all the red flags, which inevitably leads to an intense feeling of dread.

I’m not going to lie: I was uncomfortable for most of it, much like the characters were. There were times that I found the characters’ passive behaviour frustrating, but I think that was intentional. It certainly provoked strong emotions in me. The twist is discovered in the second half of the movie, and it’s truly delicious.

A great movie to watch if you haven’t already seen the original and don’t know what to expect.
