Movie Review: The Pope’s Exorcist

Russell Crowe delivers a less-than-compelling performance (what is with that accent?) in his role as renowned Chief Exorcist of the Pope (yes, it’s a thing) Fr. Gabriele Amorth. Inspired by true events, Gabe – as he’s affectionately referred to by the demon that inhabits the body of a young boy – is summoned to a small abbey in Spain to exorcise the aforementioned possessed boy.

While there is some slight comic relief (when Fr. Gabriele Amorth requests coffee at the most inopportune times), and some impressive special effects, the movie is maybe not the horror feature film we had prayed for. Overall, The Pope’s Exorcist is a well-crafted and thought-provoking movie that raises important questions about the nature of evil, faith, and the human experience.

Considering Fr. Gabriele performed at least 60,000 exorcisms before his death in 2016, the scariest part of this movie is perhaps that it’s not all entirely a Hollywood invention. If you’re a fan of horror and thriller genres, as well as interested in exploring deeper theological themes, you’ll appreciate this movie.
