Anyone would be a little sceptical rocking up to a part four in any movie franchise and Kung Fu Panda 4 was no different. With part two being my clear favourite, and part three although waning was still enjoying, part four left me a little tired. But it is a hard task finding new ways to throw a goofy panda around for few hours.
Luckily all the big names returned including, Bryan Cranston, Dustin Hoffman, James Hong and Jack Black as Po. To add some new flavour to part four we have Viola Davis who plays the main antagonist The Chameleon and Awkwafina who plays the cunning fox Zhen.
In Kung Fu Panda 4 we find Po being pinned as the next spiritual leader of the Valley of Peace, a role he feels utterly unprepared for. Adding to his dramas, he must urgently train a new Dragon Warrior before he can take on this elevated role – tough yes? Complicating matters even further, a dangerous shape-shifting sorceress (The Chameleon) threatens the peace of the valley by coveting Po’s Staff of Wisdom, which holds the power to enslave defeated villains.
Seeking assistance, Po reluctantly teams up with a thief (Zhen) who has the knack for getting under his skin. Despite their differences, they must unite to thwart The Chameleon’s sinister plans and safeguard their home. Through their unlikely partnership, Po learns that true heroes can emerge from the most unexpected places.
I am always so impressed with how DreamWorks create nothing short of a masterpiece with every frame they create and the fight scenes were taken to a new level with the new scope The Chameleon boasted.
Although the famed Furious Five were missing we did have the opportunity to reunite with a few favourite old villains from the previous films including the original challenger to Po’s Dragon Warrior crown, Tai Lung.
While not as much fun as the previous three, Kung Fu Panda 4 was still enjoyed watching and gives its core audience what it wants. At least he didn’t just settle for a wife and kids, that would have been annoying.
