Millennials, assemble!
The I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot (can we still call it that if it’s essentially the same plot recycled with a new cast, two decades later?) has returned from the dead. This time, Southport is trying to rebrand as a charming coastal resort town (despite the whole multiple murders in 1997).
For those unfamiliar with the premise: Five friends cause a deadly car accident and make a pact to keep their involvement secret. A year later, someone knows… and they’re out for revenge.
As bodies start dropping, the group realises this has happened before, so they turn to the OG survivors of the 1997 Southport massacre for help. The leads are played by a roster of forgettable up-and-comers you’ll struggle to name even while reading the credits.
It’s Freddie Prinze Jr and Jennifer Love Hewitt who breathe life back into the story, reminding us through every scene why this franchise ever worked in the first place.
What’s missing? Genuine suspense and a cast you can root for. There are the obligatory nods to modern culture (cryptocurrency scams, overfilled lips, and TikTok references that already feel dated). Expect a few fun cameos and a twist you might spot a mile away, but hey, it’s still a nostalgic ride if you’re here for the throwbacks.
The verdict? Proof that some things were better in the ’90s.
