The Roots’ front-man Black Thought, recently sat down with TheUberUrban.com to talk about his upcoming musical plans, which might surprise some longtime fans.

The legendary lyricist will be venturing outside of rap for his first solo album, a blues project tentatively titled The Talented Mr. Trotter.

“I just started writing a couple of weeks ago for a blues album kinda that I’m going to be singing on,” the Philadelphia MC explained. “I’ve been writing with Raheem DeVaughn and my friend Ray Angry. I’mma be in the studio this week writing with my friend Tunde from a band called TV On The Radio. I’mma be doing some stuff with Jim James from My Morning Jacket. Just some stuff that I feel like I need to get out that is kind of aside from the new Roots record.”

The Roots co-founder has been releasing albums with the group since 1993 and can be seen on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Trotter has mentioned aspirations to pursue a solo project before, telling MTV in 2001 that the album would be called Masterpiece Theatre.

There is no slated release date for Black Thought’s solo project as of yet, stay tuned.
