Movie Review: Project Hail Mary

Based on the bestselling novel by Andy Weir and adapted by Drew Goddard, Project Hail Mary blends large-scale science fiction spectacle with humour, emotion, and an unexpectedly heartfelt story about cooperation and hope.

The premise is stark. A mysterious organism has begun feeding on the sun, threatening to drastically reduce Earth’s energy output and potentially wipe out much of the planet’s population within decades. With time running out, the world’s scientific community launches the Hail Mary Project, a last-ditch mission to find a solution before humanity’s survival becomes impossible.

At the centre of the story is Dr Ryland Grace, a scientist played by Ryan Gosling. Grace has largely retreated from academia to teach middle school after his controversial ideas left him ostracised by the scientific establishment. Yet those unconventional ideas are precisely why the project’s ruthless and determined administrator roped him into the mission.

Ryan Gosling anchors the film with a performance that balances intelligence, vulnerability, and humour. His portrayal of Grace is both charming and slightly awkward. The zero-gravity environment even allows for moments of physical comedy, as Gosling’s character struggles with the realities of life aboard a spacecraft. His interactions with Sandra Hüller’s Eva Stratt are also a highlight.

The film takes an unexpected turn when Grace encounters an alien lifeform named Rocky. Rocky, who resembles a moving rock-like crab and is voiced by James Ortiz, becomes one of the story’s most memorable characters. Like Grace, Rocky is part of a mission to save his own species from the same cosmic threat. What begins as a cautious first contact gradually evolves into a partnership built on curiosity, ingenuity, and trust. Much of the film’s emotional core lies in the pair learning to communicate and collaborate despite coming from entirely different worlds.

Visually, Project Hail Mary is striking. Cinematographer Greig Fraser brings vivid colour and scale to the deep-space setting, while the sound design and visual effects help create a believable environment for both the spacecraft and Rocky’s unique physiology. Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller balance spectacle with character-driven storytelling, though some viewers may feel the film takes its time reaching key plot developments.

Ultimately, Project Hail Mary is a celebration of curiosity, cooperation, and the resilience of intelligent life. Beneath its high-concept science fiction premise lies a deeply optimistic message: when faced with overwhelming odds, empathy and collaboration may be humanity’s greatest strengths. It is a thrilling, funny, and emotionally resonant adventure that captures the joy of discovery and the enduring appeal of hopeful science fiction.
