It’s A Clockwork Orange meets Shaun of the Dead in arthouse form. Not for the squeamish (is *any* zombie movie, for that matter?), the first five minutes of the film are a masterclass in visceral and kooky discomfort… and it gets worse.
If you were a fan of the first two, you may be disappointed to discover that in 28 Years Later: the Bone Temple, the Rage Virus is almost entirely irrelevant, and zombies are featured at a minimum.
While Samson (the Alpha) plays an important part in the movie, it’s the absurdity of cult-leader Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal (modelled off disgraced media personality Jimmy Savile – do what you will with this information) and his band of Jimmys that drives the narrative into increasingly disturbing territory.
Multiple scenes made me physically recoil in horror. It is a violent film, but it seemed like the gore was for its own sake. Despite this, there were some very philosophical moments, laugh-out-loud phrasing, and unexpectedly, rooting *for* the Alpha.
The Doctor’s performance (literally and figuratively speaking; you’ll have to watch the movie to know what I mean) is brilliant. This may be another zombie movie, but there’s a brilliant lesson here on the inhumanity of man.
