“When I grow up I wanna be like Omar,” Stevie Wonder once proclaimed. Whether Stevie is being complimentary or is suffering from dementia he is right to sing the praises of Omar. The British soul singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist will debut in Australia this November with shows in Melbourne and Sydney.
A classically trained musician his career spans more than 22 years, 6 albums and 14 singles. Setting the stage for the neo-soul movement that was to come in the later part of the 90s, Omar debuted with the hit single There’s Nothing Like This in 1991.
Upon hearing the track in 1992 Stevie Wonder himself promised to write Omar “his first number one.” This promise was honoured 14 years later with the release of the irrepressibly funky Feeling You, which featured Wonder on vocals and keyboard. The likes of Angie Stone and Common have also publicly broadcasted their love for Omar, with him featuring on Com’s Electric Circus album.
